BEFORE YOU JOIN AIESEC

So everybody knows it's Recruitment Season for AIESEC Lagos. It's that wonderful time of the year when we bring in new talent to the LC. If you're reading this, there are some things you need to know before you buy that form ( and if you're an old member, let this refresh your AIESEC spirit).

AIESEC is the world’s largest(seriously) youth-led organisation. We have an active presence in 126 countries globally, delivering quality experiences to thousands of young people.

An organisation of this magnitude and importance needs a structure to function effectively and this structure must be understood by any intending member.

AIESEC has departments that are more popularly known as Functional Areas; FAs. These FAs are grouped broadly into Front Offices and Back Offices. As the name suggests, the Front Offices are in charge of monitoring and delivering AIESEC's core product; the Exchange Programs. The Back Offices perform more of administrative roles, making sure the organization runs effectively while achieving its' purpose; Peace and Fulfillment of Humankind's potential.

The Front Offices include;

  • Outgoing Global Volunteer (OGV)
  • Incoming Global Volunteer (IGV)
  • Outgoing Global Entrepreneur and Talent (OGET)
  • Partnership Development/Incoming Global Talent (PD/IGT)

    The Back Offices are;

    • Talent Management (TM)
    • Finance and Legal Administration (FLA)
    • Marketing, Advertisement and Communication (MAC)

We would briefly take a look at what these FAs do in this post.

    OUTGOING GLOBAL VOLUNTEER

OGV fosters exchanges for students and young people in Lagos. We match Exchange Participants (EPs) to the country of their choice and communicate with the other local communities(LC) about their various projects, accommodation fees, transportation fees and making sure they are aware of the arrival of the EP. Info sessions are then organised for the EPs to talk to them on the various challenges that might be encountered, the amount of money needed for their whole stay and various things they might need.

OGV delivers unpaid international volunteer experiences that usually run for 6-8weeks.

Want to join OGV? Be open minded, have good communication skills and be able to interact with various people all over the world, learn to brand Exchange effectively and get ready to work hard.

    INCOMING GLOBAL VOLUNTEER

This is the sister FA of OGV. There are a lot of similiarities between the two FAs. They are both involved in voluntary exchange and providing great AIESEC experiences to different people. The only difference is that while OGV is involved in taking Nigerians on exchange to other countries, IGV brings internationals to Nigeria to experience our culture and tradition the AIESEC way.

IGV is also for 6-8 weeks and the EPs get to work on community development projects voluntarily. Basically IGV is responsible for creating local projects for EPs to work on here in Nigeria, advertising these projects on the AIESEC Opportunity portal (with the help of MAC), getting interested EPs, matching them to their respective projects and 'realising' them (getting them down here from their countries). Also IGV is in charge of the intern house, the accommodation provided for the incoming EPs.

If you think IGV is great for you, you need to have great marketing skills, be flexible, willing to interact with internationals and extremely hospitable.

    OUTGOING GLOBAL ENTREPRENEUR AND TALENT

OGET is one of the core departments in AIESEC. This department makes international exchange happen for youth. The role of members in this department is to learn about the existing internship opportunities in the global  system in order to help students and recent graduates residing in Lagos find them a suitable position, help with application process and support virtually during the time of international internship.

OGET provides paid internship opportunities that usually run between 3-6 months. EPs are put in positions within international organizations based on their certified qualifications.
Join us if you enjoy marketing and would love to help people benefit from a life-changing experience.

    PARTNERSHIP DEVELOPMENT/ INCOMING GLOBAL TALENT

This FA is responsible for all partnerships AIESEC Lagos is involved in. PD guys are the official AIESEC Lagos Marketers. They sell the AIESEC Lagos brand to recognised institutions both locally and internationally and handle all relations with existing partners. They are always on the lookout for prospective partners for the LC ( in case you have a lead,**wink**)

They also help to secure paid internship placements at partnering firms for international Global Talent EPs. This arm of the FA also helps in looking after the intern house.

To be a part of this FA you need to be bold and confident with top-notch people skills to help you 'close' deals. You will also be required to attend a lot of meetings of company executives and representatives and you must have primary  knowledge of AIESEC core values and principles at your fingertips( or you can learn them very quickly, LOL).

    TALENT MANAGEMENT

TM is the Human Resources arm of the LC. These guys make sure everybody is always happy(and they work really hard to make it happen).

The TM department helps to recruit new members, develop members to their full potential, monitor development progress and manage all LC sessions and events.

As a TM member, you play a pivotal role in ensuring and setting the pace for member learning and development and setting the LC culture through internal communication and monitoring.

Join us if you enjoy helping with people to develop their full potential, planning and managing events as well as thinking of ways to help everybody work in a better environment.

    MARKETING AND COMMUNICATIONS

Now over to MAC. This FA does all the branding for various campaigns and promotions, graphic designs, video developments, blog updates and online campaigns. So when we trend on Twitter, Facebook or Instagram, it's all thanks to MAC.

Skills needed in this FA include: Graphic Design,Video Editing, Digital Marketing and general tech supremacy.
MAC guys are the in-house nerds and techies. To become one of them you must be detail oriented, have the ability to work under pressure and be very willing to learn,
P.s. They claim to be the best, and I think they are.
FUN FACT: Without MAC you wouldn't even be seeing this post.

    FINANCIAL AND LEGAL ADMINISTRATION

FLA is the Functional Area in charge of the finance and legal matters of the Local Committee. They are the in-house 'lawyers' and money experts.

Basic functions include keeping track of the LC account, collection of membership dues, drafting of yearly and quarterly budgets for the LC, registration of the organization with the school authorities and updating the LC constitution and rules (If we have money issues, these are the go-to guys).
FLA is a back office of AIESEC Lagos because they deal with the internal issues of the LC.

Join us if you like to lay down the law and tell everybody what they can and can't do. (LOL, seriously though, you need to be disciplined, bold, have a good relationship with authority, have good record keeping skills and be very organized).

    SO NOW,......
