Exchange Experience#2

Check in-
There are few instances in my life that I can point to and unequivocally say that changed my life. Going on exchange was certainly one of them.
Naturally I was very sceptical about the whole idea. I demurred going but deep down there was this feeling to explore, to experience but I still had my doubts; what if it was a scam? what if there was really nothing to this? What exactly am I gaining from this after spending so much money? And even if I decide to go how on earth would I ever convince my parents to let their son leave the country ON HIS OWN with some unknown student organization? When I look back I have to say it was a bold decision from me and my parents, especially my mom. I will forever be grateful to them for supporting the trip.
Before I went on exchange, I was this shy timid person, barely able to talk to girls. Now I am the treasurer of my department, the vice president campus engagement UEC, the TL Operations of OGCDP AIESEC Lagos, and currently contesting to be the President of my Department
There’s something special that happens when people who speak different languages; Spanish, French, English from different parts of the world come together voluntarily to achieve one goal. The petty differences that divide us didn’t matter anymore. It was now about making the world a better place.
I remember the school at Kanturo; the smiles on the faces of the kids each time they saw us was enough fulfilment for me. I remember the intern house at Sunyani; the games we played with each other: both emotional and physical; scrabble, pass or paranoia, truth or dare (when playing truth or dare with Aiesecers, never pick the dare, Aisecers are crazy!!!), doctor love, the bonfires etc. They will forever be remembered. Oh we really had a fun time at the intern house. I was told to keep this about 200 words long but I’ve gone well beyond that now. Have to start summarizing, could write a whole book about this.
I remember the excursions we went to; the waterfall, the monkey sanctuary, El Mina Castle. Climbing in the trees, taking selfies with the monkeys, crossing a 50m high bridge over the forest, dancing under the waterfall, entering the tiny prisons where slaves were kept to suffer and die. It was a really unforgettable experience.
The most emotional part of it all was when we had to say goodbye. The goodwill notes and parting gifts we gave each other. It was a moving display of love and it showed me something; that being human is a special gift from God that should be cherished.
I still remember or am forced to remember the friends I made during that period of my life because we are still on the same whatsapp group even after 2 years the Happy birthdays every now and again remind me of what a wonderful time I had with such wonderful people. Normally when they say go on exchange, you are supposed to be helping others and bettering your environment. But truth be told, as a Unilag student on holiday, there is no better way you could be bettering yourself.
My name is Ani Ifeatu and this is my Exchange story.
