Exchange Experience#1

MY EXCHANGE EXPERIENCE

My name is Akinoso Eniola Hephzibah, I went for exchange during the winter peak (November December) to Sunyani in Ghana.

Exchange was both an orientation changing and an awesome experience for me. I chose to work on the “My Career Path” project which was about educating pupils/ students. I taught Primary three Mathematics and English at St Thomas primary school, Fiapre during my stay in Ghana, had afternoon coaching classes once in a week and on Sundays, we went to a little village called Kantro to teach pupils after church. I met a lot of people and learnt a lot as team leader of our group of interns called “Safari Interns”. There were also group projects and as the leader of my group which was group 2, we had an education session for pupils and students from four primary and secondary schools in Ghana: St Thomas, Presby School, Methodist School, Girls school on HIV, First Aid and Teenage Pregnancy. During all these, I had to work with my team members, we had to sacrifice some money and time to get results, but all worked out fine and I’m glad I met all those people, children and got to gain experience from the things I did and learnt.
In the intern house, I had to live with Nigerians, Ghanaians, an Ivorian and a Polish. I had a whole lot of fun. The EB (executive board) there were fantastic. We weren’t lying idle at any time. We always had something doing. AIESEC’s values like, Activating leadership, Striving for excellence, Living in Diversity, Acting sustainably and most especially, Enjoying participation came so much into play. We had to participate in everything going on in the house. Fetching water, contributing money, sweeping and moping, roll calls, check-ins, LC meetings, everything! On Thursdays, we had in house education and watched videos that improved our AIESEC knowledge. The house had all amenities that I needed: Fair toilets, gas cookers, fridges, fans, electricity, space, free WIFI!!

The other interns were cool, we got along all fine. We had cooking groups, I was the head of one of them. I went to market every week and cooked every day, morning afternoon and night. I enjoyed it immensely. We had in house games, competitions like drama completions on particular subjects like HIV, Education, Leadership etc. We went to parties, tours to Kakum, to Cape coast, saw beaches, crocodiles, elephants, the Elmina castle etc. We had to check in every evening by 7:30 which was a meeting where everyone said how their day went. We watched films at night, gisted, laughed etc.

In closing, I had a very awesome experience in AIESEC CUCG Sunyani. I did not want to leave when the time came. I was very happy. I learnt, lived, loved, laughed a lot, cooked, led my peers, spent Ghana “cedis”, visited places, didn’t have to worry about the normal ins and outs of life and made amazing friends. I’m very grateful to AIESEC for giving me this great opportunity which advertently also fulfills AIESECs vision in its little way. I will always encourage people to go for AIESEC exchange, especially to CUCG Ghana. There is nothing like an Integrated Experience.
