PARTICIPATION IN ORGANIZATION
What is Participation? It means to join in, to take part, to involve. Organizations cannot be run without people and it can’t function properly without participation. For this to be done, the work load is shared amongst members of the organization, and the members are supposed to carry out their tasks.
A participatory organization is an organization which is based on people's participation rather than their contract obligations.
How Does lack Of Participation Affect An Organization: There are various areas in which an organization can be affected from lack of participation but here are a few of them.
Reduced input leading to reduced output.
Overload of work for one person can cause emotional imbalance.
Reduced quality of production.
Customer dissatisfaction which could eventually lead to loss of customers.
And the list goes on but let’s stop here. Let us now relate participation in AIESEC. AIESEC is an organization that needs the participation of members to function properly. We are divided into teams, given a leader, the leader comes up with a plan to achieve the set down goals of the team. Once this is done, the wok is shared amongst members and a job description of each task is outlined. Now when we don’t participate, we leave our work to our leaders to do, not that they don’t have work to do as leaders, they do, so now they have to do yours and theirs changing the plan of the leader. When we leave our work undone, it also causes our leaders to (let’s say, sort of receive query) from whom they answer to. This makes the leader unhappy. It might not necessarily be the leader who has to do the work of an unparticipating member.
We should also know that AIESEC can only help improve us if we participate. The benefits, the usefulness of AIESEC cannot be enjoyed if we don’t participate, we have to show interest and work, then we’ll begin to see the usefulness of AIESEC in our lives. One of AIESECs value is ENJOYING PARTICIPATION”, therefore, as members of AIESEC or any other organization, we are to participate in what the organization is doing.
Emotional Imbalance: When we leave our work for others to do, or don’t do them, it could lead to emotional imbalance. Take for instance, AIESEC, you are given a task which you do not do, or don’t do purposely, and your excuse might not be that substantial, but the person whom you’re leaving your work to, has his or her own organization task to do, has school work to know, etc. This could offset the plan of the person to do your work and study shoes it could affect the persons emotion.
Imagine if we all dI'd our work, with fun and excitement, everyone would be happy, there’d be better output leading to increased profit. Even if we don’t know what to do, this doesn’t mean we should run away from the work. You cannot develop and improve yourselves if you don’t face challenges, so let’s face every difficulty that comes our way, instead of running from it.
As AISECers, we are to live sustainably, live as examples to others, and one of the ways we can do this, is by, participation. Even if someone leaves his or her work undone, we can do it. This is what AIESEC trains us for. And in the process of doing this, the person who leaves the work undone would eventually start coming around, we could change the person just by the example we set down for them to see. You don’t know who could be watching you and one day, it’ll pay, that you’ve been filling in the gap for the other person.
Will leave us with this proverb “ANYTHING WORTH DOING, IS WORTH DOING WELL”. Let us think hard on this proverb and reflect on ourselves.
