HOW TO SERIES e02
Helloooo People!! How are we all doing??
Another Friday and yuuuuuppp!!!! the HOW TO SERIES is back!! Yessir! and today we are going to be looking at: HOW TO BE AN OUTSTANDING STUDENT.
INTRODUCTION:
Studentship is a position and a privilege we all have at this point to equip and make ourselves different before going to the outside world, either to work for others or have our own startup. In as much, so many view the university education system as a waste of time , or believe that at the end we are not equipped with all relevant knowledge needed at the workplace, school is a privilege and studentship is bae.
WHY THE HYPE?
This is because school is not just an environment for learning the things to be taught in class, but learning about life generally. Apart from class there is so much opportunity school provides for you that prepares you to be outstanding in life. From faculty clubs and associations, to leadership position, meeting people, scholarship opportunities, attending conferences, religious fellowship, general clubs and association, every area of our life is given an opportunity to develop and experience life. As a student you are first of all a student, a leader, member of a team, scholar, socialist, politician, entrepreneur… . However, it is lamentable that so many do not see these millennial opportunity they have gotten to be part of a university system and to be an undergraduate. This is probably the longest time you spend learning anything, it is the time you are most active and full of ideas. Other degree qualification spend lesser time, and by that time you are probably seeking a job, thinking of marriage, how to have a house and all. It is lamentable that after four years of an undergraduate study, employers complain that there is not much of an employable workforce; you are not fit and proper for a workplace, where you can provide finance for yourselves and family.
This why it is imperative to discuss how not to fall among the category of students who waste four five years of their lives just going for lectures.
HOW TO BE AN OUTSTANDING STUDENT
As I said earlier on, as a student you are first of all a student never lose focus of that.
- Work on your grade: it most of the time opens the door for good working opportunities for you, although it might not keep you in it. A minimum grade of 2nd class upper and a maximum of a first class, it is achievable. Your academic success also puts a smile on your face and that of your parents.
Tips on keeping your grade high: attend lectures, study (from the beginning of the semester if possible), have your HOUR PLAN e.g. 3hrs a day. Don’t wait till exam and start killing yourself; it doesn’t work that way all the time, and most importantly GOD: after all said and done, have a good relationship with God; he is able to make you a success.
- Join a club, association, or organization: Going to class would not teach you ethics for work, how to lead a team, work effectively in a team, commitment, tolerance of others etc, however, these skills will be required of you at interviews, to keep you in a workplace, and even for your own private startup success, which is why joining a club or organisation is very important. Every committed member of AIESEC will be able to testify to how much skills they have gotten from being a part of this group. Good grades open the door but experience keeps you in.
- Actively participate in any association you belong to: this earns you good reputation and recommendation for the future. Being a part of the association is not the real deal, be active. So have you applied for NST, or are you preparing to apply for the NEW EB POSITIONS, team leader, MLM. Remember this is your experience, you will own it, so participate.
- Have a good CV: I cant emphasis this enough!. Your CV is a piece from which you convey your personality to an employer, whether you are the right talent for the job or not. So everyone should have a CV by now, for guidance just check online. But please do not copy and paste a CV, be original, scrutinize and make the CV suit the job description. Also, you can have multiple CVs depending on the job and your experience. Most employers recommend that a CV should be restricted to a page.
- Manage your social media presence: as a student your LINKED IN, Facebook, instagram, Twitter, should not just be for fun. They should contain information about your relevant experiences and be kept professional. Your LINKED IN should contain all experience you can’t input into your CV. This a digital world, employers now check out your Social media pages, don’t let them find a scrappy page, whilst you have a great CV. The world is increasingly globalizing if you have strong views on some subject e.g. (LGBT) please don’t share them on your social media. They can cost you not getting a job in that multinational company you want.
Attend conferences and in other to network effectively have a student Business card.
Being outstanding is not just about the grades, but also the experiences you make yourself pass through, and doing little things in different ways.
So that's about it for today guys. We hope in our little way we have been able to enlighten you on how to be a better and outstanding student. If you have other tips you think might be helpful to someone out there kindly leave us a comment below.
Remember as AIESECers we should strive for excellence in all areas!.....see you guys next week!
