THE SKILLS OF 2020

The societies we live in today are vastly different from what they were twenty, or say ten years ago. Success lies in preparation, and so we must ask ourselves, what does this mean for today’s skills training and how can we keep up for the year 2020.
There are quite the number of things expected to change by 2020, including longevity, the heightened role that technology and computation will play in our personal and professional lives, and intensified globalization. The world is finding ways to do things better and to get more out of it. If we are optimistic, we can expect to live in an improved society by 2020.
For leaders however, it is important to realize that this improvement begins right now, not five years later when the skills of 2020 demands people to own a wider sense of social intelligence, computational thinking, cross cultural competency. In addition, it requires leaders to be capable of new media literacy, virtual collaboration and transdisciplinary work.
Those we deem worthy of leadership are those who are ‘one step ahead’ and who are ‘leading the way’. They are the ones who are willing to take risks and are able to adapt to change, and in doing so, become role models for those who wish to follow.
The top 10 leadership skills needed for 2020 include;
Complex problem solving: This involves using systematic methods to successfully find solutions to problems.
Critical thinking: This is the ability to logically and clear headedly think, putting all forms of beliefs or evidences aside
Creativity: The role of turning new and imaginative roles into reality.
People management: This is the ability to lead, manage, and provide ongoing support for a group of people under your leadership.
Strategy development: These strategies include abstraction, brainstorming, lateral thinking, analogy, etc. Strategy methods to be taken here include APS (Applied Problem Solving), OODA (Observe, Orient, Decide and Act), amongst others
Emotional intelligence: This is the capacity to recognize the difference between your emotions and that of others, and use the information to guide your thinking and behaviour.
Judgment and Decision making: This encompasses making right decisions and giving correct judgment, whenever the situation calls for it, not letting personal beliefs or favouritism interfere.
Service Orientation: This is the ability to recognize, anticipate, and meet the needs of others, even before those needs are articulated. It is making yourself available for others.
Negotiation: This is the ability to reach a beneficial outcome in a dialogue with two or more people.
Cognitive flexibility: This is the ability to adapt cognitive processing strategies to face new and unexpected conditions in the environment.
Here at AIESEC, we also aim to identify some of the top skills young people hope to develop today, and our Youth Speak Survey with 25,000 millennial respondents show that team management, new languages, critical thinking and problem solving skills are still the demand to help them get ahead over the next few years. The three AIESEC 2020 statements are self explanatory and underline the meaning of the organization as a global youth movement.
SHAPING WHAT WE DO AROUND WHAT THE WORLD NEEDS: This indicates that it is essential for the organization to be fast in responding to the world’s trend.
GROWING DISRUPTIVELY: This expresses the wish to expand more and more on the existing market and by that, also to create new markets. Furthermore, it also means to promote innovative ideas and to elaborate on the points that standards lead to satisfaction
BEING ACCESSIBLE TO EVERYONE, EVERYWHERE: This hints to a limitless AIESEC world without boundaries towards physical or virtual engagement with the organization. As a global movement, it is essential to make sure that we can reach out to as many young people as possible as AIESEC is not a secret to be kept.
The skills you need today versus in the future are rapidly changing. Are you prepared for the skills needed for 2020? The new AIESEC year means to bring us closer to engaging and developing every young person in the world. The map to achieving the goals is already here, it is up to us to take responsibility for our learning and that of others.
2020 is not for those who are waiting for things to happen to them, it is for those who will go out and happen to things!
